Notes on George Justus SCHRADER, Rev:, Archdeacon of Colombo
Archdeacon of Colombo and Bishop's Commissary. Qualification:- L.L.D. Vide II, 2 supra and D.B.U.Journal Vol, VI, page 71. The Venerable George Justus Schrader was instrumental in building All Saints Church, Galle, the finest ecclesiastical edifice of the Anglican Church in Ceylon, now the Church of Sri Lanka. He was a good preacher and much respected. The family derives from Justus Schrader of Brunswick who settled in Ceylon about 1710 and married at Jaffna, Christina Roeloffs. (D.B.U.Journal, Vol.VI, page 69).
On Friday,30th October 1868,the foundation of the new church to be called ALL SAINT’S was laid by Calverly Claughton, 2nd Bishop of Colombo.The church was consecrated on 21, 1871. The style of architecture is a 13 century Gothic building, modified to suit our climate. Its worth recalling that the site on which the church was built was the old Dutch Court House...-Geregts-plaats-and also the belief that ‘hanging’ took place where the altar now stands. The old Bell with its Latin inscription in memory of George Justus Schrader, which hung in the Bell loft over the aisle of the church is now in the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour.In 1968, through the good offices of Mr. R.Goddard ,retired Master Attendant, Galle the Church was able to procure a small Bell from Captain Mitchell of England, through a lady whose father was the Engineer who constructed the Rail Road to Galle. The first marriage registered at All Saints was on March 25 1871, between James Weir and Jane Strene King.The first Baptism was of Lilian Slade Godolphin Ozanne on February 21 1871. Of the past Ceylonese Vicars who ministered in Galle, the Rev Lucian Jansz and the Rev P.R.Dissanayake went on to be first Archdeacon of Kurunagala and Rev E.O.P.Welikala was the Rural Dean of the Southern Province.The Rev Swithen Fernando who served as the assistant Priest went on to be the Bishop of Colombo. A long succession of committed Christians served this Church as lay officers and in other spheres and thereby kept the Christian Worship and witness going on in this place and we remember them with gratitude as still this church stands out as one of the most beautiful Anglican churches in Sri Lanka.

Notes on George Justus SCHRADER, Rev:, Archdeacon of Colombo
Archdeacon of Colombo and Bishop's Commissary. Qualification:- L.L.D. Vide II, 2 supra and D.B.U.Journal Vol, VI, page 71. The Venerable George Justus Schrader was instrumental in building All Saints Church, Galle, the finest ecclesiastical edifice of the Anglican Church in Ceylon, now the Church of Sri Lanka. He was a good preacher and much respected. The family derives from Justus Schrader of Brunswick who settled in Ceylon about 1710 and married at Jaffna, Christina Roeloffs. (D.B.U.Journal, Vol.VI, page 69).
On Friday,30th October 1868,the foundation of the new church to be called ALL SAINT’S was laid by Calverly Claughton, 2nd Bishop of Colombo.The church was consecrated on 21, 1871. The style of architecture is a 13 century Gothic building, modified to suit our climate. Its worth recalling that the site on which the church was built was the old Dutch Court House...-Geregts-plaats-and also the belief that ‘hanging’ took place where the altar now stands. The old Bell with its Latin inscription in memory of George Justus Schrader, which hung in the Bell loft over the aisle of the church is now in the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour.In 1968, through the good offices of Mr. R.Goddard ,retired Master Attendant, Galle the Church was able to procure a small Bell from Captain Mitchell of England, through a lady whose father was the Engineer who constructed the Rail Road to Galle. The first marriage registered at All Saints was on March 25 1871, between James Weir and Jane Strene King.The first Baptism was of Lilian Slade Godolphin Ozanne on February 21 1871. Of the past Ceylonese Vicars who ministered in Galle, the Rev Lucian Jansz and the Rev P.R.Dissanayake went on to be first Archdeacon of Kurunagala and Rev E.O.P.Welikala was the Rural Dean of the Southern Province.The Rev Swithen Fernando who served as the assistant Priest went on to be the Bishop of Colombo. A long succession of committed Christians served this Church as lay officers and in other spheres and thereby kept the Christian Worship and witness going on in this place and we remember them with gratitude as still this church stands out as one of the most beautiful Anglican churches in Sri Lanka.
